But What If They Call a Foul?

Just about every Many players in MLB are wearing #42 tonight in honor of Jackie Robinson day (the anniversary of the day JR broke MLB’s color barrier).

I think all the Mets are, it looks like many of the Rays are, and some Yankees.

I really, really, wonder: why isn’t something like this standardized?  So far, I see that Jeter is.  I don’t know for certain anyone else (except Rivera, hehe), but the rest of the Yankees that aren’t (that I’ve seen on TV so far).  Doesn’t it seem like a little bit of a muddled “tribute” if only some people do it?  Either make a rule that everyone does, or don’t allow anyone to.  Then it’s just a couple of people looking foolish (be careful what you say about Jeter).  So while the Rays look good, in that everyone is wearing 42, it looks like the Yankees just don’t care (and Jeter’s sticking out like a sore thumb in that way).

I don’t know.  Lot’s of people wearing the same number certainly makes a statement, but the statement is only effective if everyone does it.

And this isn’t about race.  White and Latino players can recognize and pay tribute to the contributions that Jackie Robinson made to Major League Baseball.

So either make it uniform, or don’t let anyone do it year after year (which kind of dimishes the tribute, f’ya ask me).
