Heroes – Volume II, Chapter 1 (Four Months Later)

The second season premiere of Heroes was on last night.  Obviously, as is the show’s M.O., there were a whole bunch of questions.  Some were left over from last season and some were new.

Some of last season’s questions were answered, and some weren’t.  Here’s what (I think) we know and what we’re looking to find out.

What We Know:

  • Peter and Nathan survived the blast.  Peter we would have expected to be unharmed by the result of his own power, and now we know that Nathan managed to get away.  We don’t know why he sees himself as scarred in the mirror, and whether he’s still going to Congress (presumably, not).

  • Parkman survived being shot, and adopted Molly, and is living with her and Mohinder in what can only be described as a creepy living arrangement.  My Two Hero Dads.  Although, if they eventually reveal that Suresh and Parkman are gay lovers, that would be frikkin awesome.

  • Clare is alive (duh) and living with her whole family in SoCal.  The “subdural hematoma” has affected her mother’s face in a gross way.

  • Noah Bennett (HRG) is still trying to take down “The Company,” and working with Suresh (and presumably Parkman) to do so.

What We Don’t Know:

  • What happened to Peter’s memory, how he got locked in a shipping crate in Ireland and when he got a haircut.

  • Who the Bogeyman that haunts Molly’s nightmare’s is.

  • What power Momma Petrelli and Hiro’s dad have (had).

  • Who killed Hiro’s dad (uh, the Bogeyman that haunts Molly’s dream and this season’s villian?  My guess, not Sylar).

  • Where is Sylar?

  • How exactly does Maya make people bleed out of their eyes and die?  (She seems a little unable to control it).

  • When Parkman joined the NYPD after being such an inept LAPD cop.

  • What happened to Nikki, Micah and DL?

  • Did Peter pick up DL’s, Micah’s and Nikki’s power in Kirby Plaza (can he phase through solid materials?  If so, handcuffs should be no problem.)

  • Why was Ned Ryerson selling insurance if he can turn anything into gold?  (If you get that reference I will be mighty impressed.)

What Remains to be Seen:

  • How will Hiro’s interference with the past have repercussions in the future?  (I love when he realizes he is screwing with time and says “Great Scott!”)

  • Who the new villian is, and why he’s going after the previous generation of Heroes.

  • Plenty more, I’m sure.

Dan said (here):  “Heroes was pretty good last night, although I’m really tired of the “wacky adventures of Hiro and Ando” – even if they’re separated for the time being.

I definitely hear that, but I think Hiro’s adventures are about to take a serious and interesting turn.  I think Hiro does a lot of his growing up (into future Hiro who meets Peter on the subway) coming up.  I can’t wait to see Hiro become badass.

Feel free to leave your thoughts, comments and theories in the comments.  I thought the premiere was a good episode, and it looks like the producers were smart about developing story lines for season 2 a long time ago, and won’t lose steam after season 1.

  1. I’m guessing Peter absorbed all those powers and that’s why he exploded in the first place. Like in the middle of season 1, where he fell into a coma because he absorbed too many powers at once, I think all those new powers made him lose control. So he probably does have the ability to phase.

The problem is he lost his memory. Peter’s ability to access his powers hinges on his ability to recall the people who possess those powers. Since Peter cannot remember anything, he can’t consciously use his powers (although his body will sometimes use them subconsciously, like when that guy tried to hit him last night).

I think Maya’s brother is the antidote to her power. I have no idea what happens, but I think he can prevent her from using it.

I think Nathan is involved with the guy who is killing the older generation. I think it was him who bumped into Ando before he gave Hiro’s dad the newspaper, and it’s obvious that he could have put that picture outside his apartment for his mother to see. I doubt he’s the main bad guy, but maybe he just got fed up with everything his mother and Linderman stood for and wants to put an end to it. The real bad guy is someone who can pierce other people’s powers, so its not Sylar.

Btw what happened to the Haitian? He just vanished. Given his ability to stop other people’s powers, he’s very poweful.

If this is true, then it gets rid of a problem I had early on: If Peter absorbs everyone’s power, then he should have been able to fly well before he finally did. If he can only acquire the power after seeing it done first, then my problem goes away, because I’m pretty sure Peter didn’t fly until he saw Nathan do it (when Nathan saved Peter from that dive from the roof).

I think his body will use the powers automatically if he’s near someone with the specific power. So he turned invisible when he was in close proximity to Claude, even though he didn’t even know. At this point in his development it seems he can only use the power by recalling the person who he saw use it. Perhaps in the future he has figured out another, better way, to use his powers. It appears Sylar is able to access his powers without reference to the person he killed because he often never sees the person use the power and because Future Sylar was able to use two powers at once, something even Future Peter never did.
